Jail Farm Release Paths
The Southampton County Sheriff's Office runs the Jail Farm as a local minimum-security facility near Capron. It serves screened, nonviolent men with a short amount of time left to serve, including participants in the Sheriff's longstanding work-release program. That role shapes the record search. A person may complete the local sentence and leave for the community, receive another court-authorized release, return to the main Southampton County Jail, or transfer to another authority.
Only the Sheriff's custody event can show which path occurred. A court sentence explains the term and any later order, but it does not by itself establish when staff completed release processing. Ask for the actual date and time, the release type or authority, and any destination agency. If the record says the person returned to the main jail or entered VADOC, custody continued. Do not label an outside work shift, medical trip, court trip, or other approved movement as release.
Confirm Jail Farm Release
The Sheriff does not publish a verified person-level Jail Farm roster or release archive. Start with the local agency rather than assuming that a name will appear in VADOC or a public recent-release list. Request an existing booking, release, discharge, or transfer record for a narrow date range. Useful fields include the commitment date, booking number, exact release time, manner of release, authority, and receiving custodian. Virginia FOIA permits reasonable actual-cost charges, so ask for an estimate. No fixed local release-record fee was verified. Staff names can change; confirm the current records custodian before sending sensitive identifiers.
Jail Farm Work Release
The Sheriff's official description gives the Jail Farm a rated capacity of one hundred beds. It is a minimum-security facility for screened, nonviolent male offenders, not an open community residence. Work-release participants perform paid community work while a short portion of their sentence remains. Authorized work access changes where the participant may be during part of the day, but the Sheriff's commitment still controls custody.
The program permits earnings to be used for court costs, child support, restitution, and family support. That published feature does not show that a specific person has satisfied every financial duty, nor does a pay stub prove discharge. No official pay-to-stay or booking-release fee policy was verified. Release status still turns on the Sheriff's custody entry and the court record, not a participant's work schedule or financial activity.
Jail Farm Discharge Record
A focused record request should distinguish sentence completion from program participation. Ask for the document that shows the date and time the person left Jail Farm custody, the authority for that movement, and any destination. If the person went back to the main jail, the farm placement ended but county confinement did not. If the person entered another jail, VADOC, USMS, or ICE custody, the event was a transfer.

The sentencing court can supply the controlling order and docket. For local misdemeanor matters, start with the Southampton General District Court record. Circuit Court holds felony trial records and district-court appeals. A clerk-certified order is useful when the public docket is incomplete, but it does not replace the Sheriff's exact exit record.

ICE Holds at Jail Farm
A detainer from ICE or another authority can change the destination at the end of the local term. ICE says an immigration detainer asks the local agency to maintain custody for up to forty-eight hours past the ordinary release point so ICE may assume custody. If that occurs, the Sheriff's record may close the Jail Farm commitment while another agency opens or continues detention.
Use the ICE Online Detainee Locator System only after a local record points to ICE. It accepts an A-number with country of birth or supported biographical data. Official guidance says recent ICE releases remain searchable for about sixty days, and not every custody stage appears at once. Describe the event accurately as release from Southampton custody to ICE. A failed online search does not establish that the person went home.
Jail Farm Facility Identity
Southampton's correctional map contains both Sheriff and state facilities around Courtland and Capron. The local Jail Farm is not Deerfield Men's Work Center, despite both having work-oriented names. The Sheriff operates the Jail Farm. VADOC operates Deerfield Correctional Complex and its two men's work-center entries. Those systems use different inmate numbers, release records, and notification routes.
Historical reports also use names such as Southampton Correctional Center and Deerfield Women's Work Center. The current VADOC directory does not list those as separate active inmate facilities. Confirm the operator, address, and identifier before calling a person released.
A local case number and Sheriff booking number point toward the Jail Farm record. A VADOC number points toward a state institution or supervisee file. When the only clue is a Capron location, ask which agency operated the placement before discussing release. This small check avoids a false conclusion based on a similar facility name and directs the request to the office that can document the actual custody event.
Read Jail Farm Release Status
Words such as release, discharge, return, and transfer describe different outcomes. A community discharge ends the relevant local commitment without a receiving custodian. A return to the main jail ends farm placement but leaves the person in Southampton custody. Transfer to state prison changes operators. Probation can place a person in the community under court-set conditions, while another detainer can prevent that community move.
