Deerfield Complex Release Paths

Deerfield Correctional Complex is a Virginia Department of Corrections institution in Capron. It holds people sentenced under the state system regardless of the county where the conviction occurred. When a person leaves Deerfield, VADOC may discharge the sentence, release the person on parole or another form of supervision, or transfer the person to a different VADOC institution. The Southampton County Sheriff's Office does not control those state movements.

A community release should produce VADOC release documentation. A transfer remains state custody even when the old institution disappears from the locator detail. If a probation or parole district appears, that supports community supervision but does not mean the whole sentence ended without conditions. The assigned district follows the supervision plan and residence. It is not always District 42 in Franklin simply because Deerfield sits in Southampton County.

That current naming matters because older audits and population reports describe a broader historical complex. Deerfield Complex Release Logistics

VADOC publishes logistics that apply to release from a state facility such as Deerfield. Its facility release guidance says a person leaving on discharge or parole receives a notification-of-release letter. Weather permitting, release occurs by 11:59 p.m. on the scheduled date. That is an outside boundary, not a promised pickup hour for a specific person.

Records staff determine whether approved transportation will be public transit or pickup by approved family or friends. The business office can arrange bus travel when applicable. Facility staff return personal property, and the release envelope may contain identity and educational papers. Those procedures are documented VADOC practices. They should not be copied onto the Southampton jail pages because the Sheriff has not published the same local process.

Deerfield Release Date Meaning

VADOC distinguishes a calculated date from a completed event. Projected parole-eligibility, mandatory-parole, or good-time-release dates reflect the sentence and credit data held at the time of inquiry. They can move when VADOC receives corrected court papers or jail-credit information, when concurrent or consecutive terms change, when credits are earned or lost, or when another sentence affects the computation.

Do not turn the sentence length into a personal release estimate. Virginia has more than one credit framework. Offense date, conviction statute, earning class, exclusions, discipline, restoration, and prior jail credit matter. The exact label on the live record controls. A date labeled projected must remain projected. After release, the letter and agency discharge record are better confirmation than disappearance from an active custody result.

ICE Holds After Deerfield Release

A detainer can change what happens at the end of the state term. If VADOC releases a person to ICE or another authority, the VADOC custody event ends but community freedom does not begin. Read the receiving agency field in the release record and ask VADOC to identify the destination when the public locator does not explain it.

ICE describes a detainer as a request that a law-enforcement agency maintain custody for up to forty-eight hours past the ordinary release point so ICE may assume custody. After a documented handoff, search the ICE detainee locator with an A-number and country of birth or supported biographical details. Official guidance says the locator shows recent releases for about sixty days. A delayed or missing ICE result does not convert a transfer into a community release.

Keep the VADOC number, A-number when known, handoff date, and receiving agency in one record. Those identifiers connect the state event to the later ICE search without assuming that both systems update at the same speed. If ICE later records its own release, that is a second custody event and should not be substituted for the earlier Deerfield departure time.

Deerfield Complex Current Identity

Southampton County contains overlapping correctional systems. The Sheriff operates the county jail and Jail Farm. VADOC operates Deerfield Correctional Complex plus two separate men's work-center entries. A reference to “Deerfield” or “Capron” may therefore be incomplete. Confirm the full facility name, street address, operator, and state number before choosing the record source.

Older sources mention Southampton Correctional Center and Deerfield Women's Work Center. The current VADOC directory does not list those names as separate operating inmate facilities. Historical PREA material can explain how the complex was arranged at an earlier point, but the live directory governs today's lookup. VADOC administrative offices and the Capron staff academy are also not inmate-release facilities. This current-versus-legacy check prevents an old institutional name from being mistaken for a new release destination.

When an old court paper uses a former name, pair it with the person's VADOC number and the date of that entry. Then consult the current locator for the next state location. This preserves the history without treating a closed or reconfigured unit as a live release counter. It also keeps a transfer inside the state system separate from an actual discharge into the community. The current directory should be checked again whenever the inquiry concerns a new movement.
